SangHa and Taylor in front of the sign for Morrow Plots
The plan was to meet up on Monday and get some of these photos taken care of, but that didn't work out because some people weren't on campus due to the holiday, and then others didn't get the message that we had to cancel. There was also a problem with residence halls on campus, so some people had to be evacuated. A special shout out to Taylor and SangHa for going to the Marrow Plots anyway, because Jessica couldn't get a hold of you to cancel our meeting. Thanks for being dedicated group members!

Today we got all group members together, and had a blast. Our first stop: The Marrow Plots.
Did you know?
-The Marrow Plots are the oldest continually used experimental fields in the U.S. and second oldest in the world (only to Rothamsted Field in England that was founded in 1843). They were founded in 1876 by Manley Miles and George Marrow, both leaders of agriculture at UIUC.
-The Marrow Plots were the first soil experimental plots by a United States college.
-Only 3 of the 10 original plots survive. The Observatory claimed 2 plots in 1895 and five others were given back as grassy areas in 1903.
-The fields, now located at Gregory Dr., were designated a National Historic Landmark on May 23, 1968. The fields are still actively used by the university, and "corn samples are taken to measure yield each year. A small sample of corn from each plot is saved for future analysis. The remaining corn is brought out to the South Farm and stored in our grain bins until it is marketed".
-Although popularly credited with forcing the Undergraduate Library to be built underground in 1969, its false. In fact, the Campus Master Plan, which required a large open plaza on south end of campus, was an equally important factor. At the 1969 proceedings for the Library, the need to "maintain the open appearance of the mall" was cited as a primary reason for the decision to build underground.

Next stop: The Freedom of the Press Historical Marker outside of Gregory Hall on the Quad.
The Freedom of the Press marker located outside of the entrance to Gregory Hall was inspired by Theodore B. Peterson, Fred Siebert, and Wilbur Schramm. All three of these men authored "Four Theories of the Press" in 1996. This book applied classical philosophical principles to the concept of the press in a society that was rapidly modernizing. Theodore Peterson, the Dean of the College of Communication, educated his students on the historical and educational aspects of the freedom of the press. Today, his ideas have helped transform the way journalism and media are studied.

Next up was the Illini Union, where we had two clues. The first was "The intersect program is ran out of this office". After careful research, we came to the conclusion that is the Illinois Leadership Center located in 290 Illini Union.
We found out that the Leadership Center offers 6 different leadership seminars at no cost to U of I students, The programs are run on the donations and generousity of the ILC'c individual and coperate partners.
Since our clue was about Intersect, we decided to learn more about that program. Intersect is the i-program that focuses on interpersonal communication and it's main design is to help improve how students work with others. It is geared for freshman, but it is open for anyone to register, and they even have a special summer session for incoming freshmen so that more people can attend. These programs are taught at a 20% lecture and 80% execution. So it really is a hands on experience when you are discovering your personal listening style and how to improve group dynamics.
There are other i-programs as well. Like Intersect, they only last for a day and teach specific leadership skills. For example, Insight is about self-awareness and self-management. Imprint is about development and networking. Ignite focuses on group organization and group development, and Integrity deals with integrity and leadership.

Did you know?
-There is also a six-day, five-night leadership retreat called Leadershape Institute, which works with various areas of leadership.
-The Illinois Leadership Center also has a facebook page and a twitter page which you can become a fan of / follow!
-You can even earn a Leadership Certificate if you complete the customized leadership program!
-Cavenaugh Leadership Resource Library is where you will be able to find great leadership-related resources, such as published articles, popular books and activity materials.
(All the information above and even more information about the Center’s amazing programs can be found on their website: www.illinoisleadership.illinois.edu)

Also in the Illini Union, right next door, was room 288. After talking to the representative, we realized that we walked into the Illini Union Office of Volunteer Programs. The office has a binder with local volunteer opportunities where students can sign up and volunteer their time. They have a wide variety of jobs, and are always looking for media students.
At the Illini Union Office of Volunteer Programs, you can:
-Get connected to over 250 service agencies in the Champaign-Urbana community
-Find information on education and career opportunities in the service sector
-Get help organizing a service activity
-The Office itself runs multiple volunteer events throughout the year, some of which are:
-Volunteer Fair: annual fair held in the beginning of each fall semester, which enables students to meet with different service agencies
-Holiday Toy Drive: held later in the fall semester, a toy drive in which students can collect toys and gifts for local children
-National Volunteer Week: an entire week in late spring, in which multiple volunteer activities happen on campus and off campus.

Throughout the year, you can also check out cuvolunteer.org to see if there are any volunteer opportunities you might be interested in!
